Scripture on Homosexuality

Scripture on Homosexuality - the Bible

Whether we are discussing homosexuality, adultery, hatred towards others, or any other kind of sin, it is important that we go to the Bible to see what it has to say vs what we have to say or think. There is always a great temptation especially within the culture to engage in conversations that aren’t loving or helpful towards one another when discussing “hot topic” items. In today’s culture, homosexuality is for sure one of those topics.

For the follower of Christ, treating this subject is really no different than any other one…or at least it shouldn’t be. We must be careful to take everything back to God’s Word to see what He has to say about it and go from there. At the same time, as we communicate what the Bible says about homosexuality towards another, let’s be careful and make sure we are wanting to love the person regardless of the sin that is happening. We love others because Jesus first loved us (1 John 4:19) and I guarantee not only were we sinners at that time….but we are still sinners today in need of our Savior.

We must be careful to take everything back to God’s Word to see what He has to say about it.

Let’s look and see what the Bible has to say with Scripture on Homosexuality:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 – Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:8-11 – Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.

Romans 1:26-28 – For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

1 Corinthians 7:2 – But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

Mark 10:6-9 – But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Hebrews 13:1-4 – Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

Mike, I appreciate you taking the time to find and share The Word. As Jeff Potts told us yesterday, however, if we forsake application then we’ve failed in our study. I wonder why you’re leaving us here with only information and no application? As you consider that, would you also consider the following? Does the affirmation or condemnation by the Bible of any particular behavior (sin) speak to the non-believer? Or are its directives only relevant to those who are in Christ? (That is to say, is there any relevance in speaking to an unbeliever about their sin in the… Read more »

Thanks Ryan! I think there are many areas this can apply to that definitely won’t fit inside a comment. Thinking through various ideas on doing application posts as followups to these Scripture posts, thanks for the idea! Scripture makes it clear to avoid sexual immorality along with all other sins. A couple applicable areas would be to avoid such areas and let the Bible and Holy Spirit guide us in striving to live holy lives each day. It would also apply for us to not condemn others regardless of their sin, but to love them and point them to Christ.… Read more »
